Southwest Academy for 21st Century Excellence
Platteville’s Project Lead the Way Small School Consortium

As our society becomes increasingly dependent on engineering and technology, it is imperative that our youngsters understand these fields. To meet this need, educators across the country are working to infuse engineering and technology into classrooms..

Each Engineering is Elementary unit engages students in an exciting design challenge that requires them to apply their knowledge of an elementary school science topic. EiE units also connect to mathematics, language arts, and social studies lessons.  EiE units meet National Standards for Technological Literacy and are available at two levels, basic and advanced.

EiE Units Include:

  1. a storybook in which a child character engineers a solution to a problem. Each story features a child from a different country and background and demonstrates that with some creativity and knowledge of the engineering design process, everyone can engineer!
  2. lesson plans with detailed instructions for teachers.
  3. duplication masters with photocopy ready handouts for students.
  4. background information and additional resources for teachers.
  5. assessment sheets and rubrics. The Engineering is Elementary (EiE) project promotes elementary student learning of engineering and technology with curricular materials and teacher professional development opportunities. EiE is a research-based, standards-based, and classroom-tested curriculum
